The roots had once held them close, threads of life and memory, a comfort beneath their feet. Now those same roots tightened, binding them in silence. They did not dream of escape, for they knew no world beyond the prophecy. Joy had turned to dread, and the earth that once sustained them now held them captive, never letting go.
