Notebook Excerpt

Munch needed time to process the loss of his sister Sophie. His reproductions of The Sick Child were done over a 40 year period showing how her death seemed to haunt him his entire life. only with time has a darker feel when compared to the other tracks in the album staying in the lower register of the piano while all the others branch out whether it’s just a few notes in the melodies or whole sections. This darkness expressing the grief Munch must have felt. It’s also one of the shortest pieces in the album mirroring how young Sophie was when she died.
